A REQUEST FOR LOCAL POSTCARDS
’ Prior to World War II a collection of photographs of churches, houses and local scenes were published as Picture Post Cards and sold in Village Shops.
Sadly the photographer cannot be traced and the firm that published these cards is no longer in business.
I would like to trace as many as possible of these cards and wonder is any Readers have retained copies in their scrap books or records.
I would be grateful if any Readers who have copies of these cards would please contact me.
Thanking you in anticipation.

NEWSPAPER DELIVERIES
For any one who is new to the village and is interested, we do have a paper delivery service. The papers come from the Post Office at Marks Tey and are delivered to a point in the village where the children collect them and deliver them before going to school. Unfortunately this delivery service is limited to the village only during the week (Mon – Fri), all out lying houses have to fend for themselves. There is a delivery service to the outlying houses as well as the village at the weekend though. The charge is 30p per day in the village and 75p per day (Sat – Sun) for out lying house. This cost may seem high, but it has to cover the cost of the children and weekend adult who deliver the papers and also the cost of the man who delivers early every morning to the village. If any one is interested in having a paper delivered they should contact the Post Office at Marks Tey and let them know your name and address and where your house is situated.
FLYTIPPING
Incidences of Flytipping of household rubble, hardcore and green tree cuttings in Brook Road ( and other sites in the Parish ) have been brought to the attention of the Parish Council.
The Parish Council kindly request those persons involved in this practice to make arrangements to ensure that any waste material that cannot be catered for by the weekly refuse collections is disposed of in a correct and environmentally friendly manner.
Please keep Great Tey clean and tidy. Thank you.
THE PLAYING FIELDS IN GREAT TEYSeveral parishioners have asked the Parish Council about the ownership and use of the two playing fields in Gt Tey.
Both the Harold Fairs playing field (next to the school) and the Old Playing Field, (next to the Church, and accessed via the Chase) are in the ownership of the Parish Council, for the use of and enjoyment of all parishioners.
Dog fouling is not allowed on either field and there are dog bins on both fields.
Pedestrians have right of way down the Chase, and it leads to The Essex Way, and the allotments.
There is a pedestrian gate leading into the playing field.
If anyone needs to take a vehicle onto the Old Playing Field, the permission of the Parish Council has to be sought, but as long as the ground is sufficiently firm enough, no reasonable request would be refused.’

Great Tey Parish Council
SALT BAG PARTNERSHIP
Following our note in last months A&A and by way of further explanation, Essex County Council is supporting local communities to help themselves during periods of heavy snow through encouraging Parish Councils to take part in a Salt Bag Partnership.
This project involves each Parish being distributed salt for use on the pavements that are important to their community, such as footpaths to local shops and services, doctor’s surgeries, bus stops, schools etc. Thank you to those that have responded regarding the identification of locations badly affected by the snow and ice last winter.
The salt comes as a one tonne delivery of 20kg sealed bags for ease of storage and Great Tey Parish Council have organised delivery to a central location, prior to prioritising distribution.
ECC have advised that salt is ineffective against snow of a greater depth than 10mm (1/2 inch) so the area must be manually cleared before salt is spread. Your Parish Council are now looking for volunteers (who at their own risk) are willing to assist in clearing the snow from pavements. There are information packs on ‘best practices’ that will be made available to those that volunteer their services.
If you feel you are able to assist and offer support (given the nature of the work, volunteers should be physically able to manually remove snow and then spread a thin layer of salt), then please contact David Williams, Parish Clerk:-
Tel Phone: 01787 224895 or Email david@greenlandsfarm.freeserve.co.uk.
Please Note:
i.Great Tey Parish Council are co-ordinating this initiative on behalf of ECC and cannot accept any legal responsibility for actions to / by Volunteers.
ii.The salt provided as part of this scheme is for use on use on the highway only and not for any other area, such as, private driveways.
iii. This initiative does not substitute any action that Householders consider appropriate to clear pavements or footpaths outside their own properties.
Thank you.
COMMUNITY STREET WARDENS
Whilst other Councils are cutting back it is encouraging that Colchester B.C. have introduced a team of Community Wardens, who by car or on foot, and armed with wide ranging set of roles, target improving the quality of life for residents and visitors and to reduce the incidence and fear of crime and disorder
There are 7 Zones – our Parish falls in Zone 2 and our contacts are Gary Cole on 07507 647373 or Zoe Frost on 07817 297215. Both may be contacted direct on these numbers.
Warden’s cars are very distinctive with large lettering emblazoned on the sides saying ‘Colchester Community Wardens’ with ‘Community Safety Scheme Accredited’ symbols.
Wardens all wear a distinctive uniform, which while being intentionally ‘casual’ also serves the purpose of being both functional and visible.
Although the wardens have no police powers, they have been accredited by Essex Police to issue fixed penalty notices (FPN’s) for specific misdemeanours. Activities include: –
•Developing links with local neighbourhood-watch schemes.
•Attending community forums and residents associations.
•Distributing crime reduction advice.
•Being a point of contact for access to services for vulnerable people.
•Monitoring and/or removing graffiti.
•Attending to abandoned vehicles and issuing notices for car tax evasion to DVLA.
•Enforcing laws concerning fouling by dogs and littering.
•Monitoring and feeding back on environmental concerns.
•Under police accreditation, removing cigarettes and alcohol from young people.
•Educating and providing information on recycling and environmental issues
•Investigating incidences of fly-tipping, clearing – where case evidence can be found prosecuting.
The Wardens are also involved with the communities’ youth and older peoples groups, assistance with sport and leisure activities, community Fete’s and organising shopping trips.
POST OFFICE
The post office outreach service for Great Tey is now every Tuesday and Friday at the Village Hall, opening from 1.30pm until 4.30pm. Please use this service if you want to keep a post office service in the village.
The Village Notice Board is located on the wall of Bell House Garage, at the top of the Chase opposite the Chequers Pub..

Great Tey Drop In Centre
After a slow start we eventually had a good number of people to this months Drop-In, which was quite fortunate because we had two gentlemen from Colchester Council’s new “Help” scheme – see Roger Brewer’s report. These gentlemen were able to go around to each table explaining the new scheme and getting to know some of the villagers who may find use of their services.
Next month we will be another charity Drop-In and this time it is in aid of the Colchester Night Shelter. Usual time and place – 2.00pm – 4.00pm, Village Hall, Thursday 8th December. Along with our normal fare of tea, coffee, biscuits and home made cakes we will be having a raffle, including a lovely Christmas Hamper filled with “goodies”, mulled wine, mince pies, a cake stall (donations of all sizes most welcome) and of course the usual book table. Hopefully we may even have the school children singing carols to make the day feel really festive. If anyone would like to have a table to display their “wares” they are more than welcome too. On behalf of everyone involve with the Drop-In I would like to wish you all a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Peaceful New Year.

Great Tey Footpath Preservation Society
Our November walk was entitled ‘Jane’s Surprise’ and led by Jane Pearson. We drove to Polstead, to uncover the story of William Corder, Maria Marten and the Red Barn Murder, which took place in 1827 and for which William Corder was hanged in 1828. It was very foggy when we left Polstead Church and so we could not admire the view but, as the circular walk progressed, the sun managed to make an appearance and we were able to see the site of the Red Barn, Corder’s farm and the Marten house, as well as being able to appreciate the lovely Autumn colours and the beautiful Suffolk countryside. Lunch was taken at the Cock Inn in Polstead, where the inquest, following Maria Marten’s death was actually held. Many thanks to Jane for organising this very interesting walk.
In December we plan to attend, as usual, the annual Cyclists’ and Ramblers’ carol service at Lawford Church. We will leave the village hall at 9.39 am, on Sunday 11th December and have a morning walk, followed by lunch, after which we will make our way Lawford Church for the service. We will share cars and look forward to welcoming as many members and friends who would like to join us.
Also in December we will be having our annual pre-Christmas walk, on Sunday, 18th December, meeting at the Chequers, at 10.00 am and returning there afterwards for seasonal refreshments. Again, all are welcome to join us.
Finally, we will be walking ( 4 to 5 miles) in the Lavenham area, on Sunday, 15th January, leaving the village hall at 9.39 am. Again we will be sharing cars and will welcome all who would like to join us on this Away-day walk.
Any enquiries about the above walks, please contact Peter Wakeling – 211887.

Great Tey C of E (Controlled) Primary School
Chrismund Way, Great Tey, Colchester, CO6 1AZ Telephone: 01206 210415 www.greatteyprimary.ik.orgWe are now well into the second half of our autumn term, and the children are all getting excited and enthusiastic about our planned Christmas activities and events. We have started to rehearse our Christmas production and the children are working hard learning lots of new songs.
Class 3 visited Copford Primary School, along with other local primary schools, to take part in a Music Workshop. The theme was London 2012 with a focus on our country, our royal family and patriotism, the children wore red white and blue costumes! The children sang songs such as God Save the Queen, Singing in the Rain and Waterloo and everyone had made a top hat with an English flag to wave. The highlight was the final song when all 8 schools waved their flags in time to ‘There’ll always be an England’. The children were a real credit to the school.
Class 2 and Class 3 have welcomed parents and grandparents into school to talk about their experiences in their lives; the children posed as oral historians and spent time with the visitors interviewing them.
Now for our Christmas events; we will be holding a Christmas Fayre in the school hall on Monday 5th December from 2 pm. Please come along and enjoy festive refreshments with us, and maybe take part in a few side stalls. Don’t forget all of our other Christmas events that we have mentioned earlier:
•Christmas Production on Tuesday 13th December at 10.30 am in the school hall (please ring and let us know you are coming so that we can reserve a seat for you)
•Carols by Candlelight Service on Thursday 15th December at 5.30 pm at St. Barnabas Church
•Traditional Christmas Carol Service on Friday 16th December at 10 am at St. Barnabas Church
We hope we will see some of you at the above mentioned events.
Looking ahead to next year, we are planning a Quiz Night, so another date for your diaries is Friday 23rd March. The quiz will be held in the school hall, and guests are welcome to bring drinks and nibbles. If you would like to come along, tickets will be on sale in the spring term after we return from the Christmas holidays; watch out for more details on this event.
Another quick reminder, don’t forget when you are doing your Christmas shopping on-line, to log into www.thegivingmachine.co.uk and place your order; you can then select schools and charities of your choice to whom you would like to make a donation; there are over 350 of the UK’s leading retailers signed up to this scheme – please help us to raise much needed funds for our children.
Finally, on behalf of myself, my staff and the children at Great Tey Primary School, we all wish you a very Merry Christmas.
